[Description] 50 years ago, Channing & Jane Murdock opened Butternut Basin Ski Area on Great Barrington's Warner Mountain. Just 28 at the time, they became the youngest ski area proprietors in the entire country. With the help of 136 shareholders, each of whom chipped in $1,000, Channing built an Italian chairlift to the mountain's summit and the ski area was born. Shareholders received butternuts and skiing privileges in lieu of future dividends. 50 Years later, Ski Butternut is still owned and operated by the Murdock family, and is now renowned as an affordable and family friendly ski area with a reputation for introducing countless skiers and snowboarders to the joys of winter sports. Dec. 7, 2013 was the start of out season at Ski Butternut and we have been rocking ever since! This is one of the best starts to a ski season in years. If you have missed out on the fun don't worry there is a whole season a head of us.
