[Description] 50 years ago, Channing & Jane Murdock opened Butternut Basin Ski Area on Great Barrington's Warner Mountain. Just 28 at the time, they became the youngest ski area proprietors in the entire country. With the help of 136 shareholders, each of whom chipped in $1,000, Channing built an Italian chairlift to the mountain's summit and the ski area was born. Shareholders received butternuts and skiing privileges in lieu of future dividends. 50 Years later, Ski Butternut is still owned and operated by the Murdock family, and is now renowned as an affordable and family friendly ski area with a reputation for introducing countless skiers and snowboarders to the joys of winter sports. Thank you for helping us celebrate this significant milestone, our Golden Anniversary!
